Veteran's Month, 2017.... Random Thoughts...

November is Veteran's Month... at least to this fading old Marine. It's a month in which we celebrate the Marine Corps Birthday. It's a month in which we set aside one day, November 11, to honor our veterans. This day, when I was a boy, was called Armistice Day. The day was to remember the end of the War to End All Wars, World War I. Unfortunately, this was not to be. We continue to fight wars all over the world. Our Veterans, and those brave souls in other countries, continue to put themselves in harms way in order to preserve freedom and independence from those who would enslave or force their beliefs on us. 
 A few years ago, I started to reflect on those who stepped up and stepped out to defend the defenseless. These men and women never asked the religion of those whom they were fighting for. They never asked political bent, nor ethnicity, or if they were rich or poor. They did what they did because they belonged to a society that believes in certain freedoms.

New Year’s Eve Redux

  What a tumultuous year this has been, for our country, our world, and for me, personally.
 We have seen the destruction of the caliphate. We have watched as the protections put in place to protect our environment have been diminished by executive order and by the appointment of a man who wants to destroy the EPA as head of the EPA. We have seen Neo Nazis march past a synagogue in Charlottesville, chanting “Jew will not replace us!” And we have heard the President saying that some of them were ‘Good People.’
  As for me, personally, I have had to overcome some ver serious health issues which brought me close to either death or paralysis. I had to learn to walk and use my hands all over again. I continue to recover, and so far, I am doing quite well.
  This is why, despite this hate, the optimist in me thinks that the pendulum will once again swing the other way.

Thoughts From My Ice Cave: Winter Storm Watch

 We are again on the verge of being hit by another major Winter storm.... This one, the great (Ha!) Lonnie Quinn is calling a Nor'easter. Again, the news shows are playing it all up.. trying, it seems, to instill fear in the already chilled hearts of the people of New York. The people, for their part, are dutifully stocking up necessities, getting ready for the next battering that the tri-state area will take.    The pols go before the cameras to show their serious faces, and to assure the public that they are ready for any contingency. We just shake our heads and grumble. The more things change, the more they remain the same.
  We are a proud group of citizens, we of this tri-state area. We have been battered and bruised by all that Mother Nature could throw at us... ice storms, Hurricanes, blizzards, nor'easters that can be either rain and wind, snow and wind, or a combination of both. Floods... even tornadoes; yet we endure and move on. Oh, we may bitch and moan and complain…
